Where the prices come from
All prices, stations and opening hours come from the open data of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), published on its Geoportal de Hidrocarburos. Every station in Spain must report its prices to the Ministry when they change. We check the Ministry’s data every 30 minutes; every page shows when it was last checked.
The price at the pump can differ from the reported price for a while after a change, so always check the price at the station before you fill up. If you see a mistake, tell us with the “Seen a mistake?” link.
Median, not average
For a town, a province, a brand or the whole of Spain we show the median price: half of the stations charge less and half charge more. One very expensive or very cheap station barely moves the median, while it can pull an average up or down. The median always counts every station in the area that sells that fuel.
Comparisons such as “below the median” or “cheaper than the province” compare a station’s current price with the current median of that area.
Price history
History goes back to 2007 and comes from the Ministry’s daily price files. For every day we take each station’s price and calculate the median, minimum and maximum for Spain, every region, province and town, and every brand.
- Prices below 60% or above 160% of the regional median of that day are left out of the statistics. They are almost always typing errors (for example 0.15 € instead of 1.50 €). AdBlue is not filtered, because its price varies too much.
- Charts for 30 days and one year use one point per day. Longer periods use one point per month: the median of the daily medians.
- A station page shows the station’s own price history.
Brands
The Ministry gives each station’s sign as free text. We match signs to brands with our own list of names and spellings. Stations that do not belong to a known chain are shown as independent. If a station has the wrong brand, please tell us.
Other calculations
- “Open now” and “24 h” use the opening hours reported to the Ministry.
- “Cheaper nearby?” looks for stations within 5 km in a straight line. The cost of the trip assumes 6.5 l/100 km there and back.
- Distances on the “Near me” page are in a straight line, not by road.
